Two-Lined Spittlebug

=

Adult two-lined spittlebugs resemble black leafhoppers with two red/orange stripes across the back. Spittlebug nymphs have a cream-colored body with a brown head and red eyes. The most distinctive characteristic of the spittlebug nymphs is the frothy, white liquid that covers them and provides them with protection.

Adult spittlebugs may feed on grasses resulting in chlorotic stippling of the blades. The nymphs suck sap from the stems of grasses, leading to weakened turf that may turn from yellow to brown.

=

Centipedegrass and St. Augustinegrass are the preferred hosts.
