Moles

=

Moles are generally 4” to 7” long. They have paddle-shaped feet with prominent digging claws. They have grayish, velvety fur which allows them to move easily through their tunnels.

=

Moles are omnivores, but primary food sources consist of earthworms and other small invertebrates found in the soil.

=

They dig characteristic volcano-shaped hills and tunnels in the lawn. A single mole can tunnel nearly 150 feet in a lawn each day.

=

Moles are most active in the early morning and late evening during the spring and fall.

=

Mole management is difficult. By managing their food sources like white grubs, and the use of repellents may help to a small degree. Trapping is difficult and labor intensive.

=

Methods like chewing gum, vibration, and ultrasonic devices, that are advertised to deter moles, often are not effective. Mothballs, also used often, do not work, and it is illegal as it is a misuse of a pesticide.
